November 17, 1966. Bethesda Naval Hospital. Morning. The secretary working today’s Diary details LBJ’s activities as he recovers from throat and abdominal surgery.
First, a visit from former President Eisenhower:
“The President gave General Eisenhower a set of the gold cufflinks with the Presidential seal on them saying that he was one of the three men who could legitimately wear them, and since they had no donkey or elephant on them, he could wear them with ease.”
After Ike’s departure around 9 AM:
“The President asked Jake Jacobsen to come in. As he was in, Mrs. Johnson entered the room—the President looked up and saw how fresh she looked and commented to Jacobsen, ‘See, Jake, I robbed the cradle 32 years ago!’”
Then Bill Moyers enters:
“The President showed Bill the star sapphire tie tacks that he had gotten for the press while in Thailand and later decided not to give them. He gave Bill one of the tie tacks.”
Then the President begins planning a surprise party for Lady Bird. Today is their thirty-second wedding anniversary.
