During the 1948 Senate race, LBJ developed an innovative new way to connect with voters: helicopter. In addition to allowing him to cover much more ground, the helicopter guaranteed excitement and media attention for his campaign stops. Dubbed the “Johnson City Windmill” by reporters, it could hover and land in fields and small towns all around the state. By some accounts, the helicopter allowed Johnson to reach an estimated 175,000 Texans - now that is some successful outreach!
