Coke Robert Stevenson was LBJ’s opponent in the 1948 Senate election. Stevenson was Lieutenant Governor under Pappy O’Daniel from 1939 until 1941, when O’Daniel left for the Senate. Stevenson would then serve as Governor of Texas from 1941 until 1947: he was the longest-serving Governor until Rick Perry.
Issues important to Stevenson while he was in office included soil conservation, financing the highway system, and raising teacher salaries. To learn more about Coke Stevenson check out these articles from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission’s Portraits of Texas Governors and the Texas State Historical Association’s The Handbook of Texas Online.
