During his 1946 Congressional campaign, LBJ enlisted the help of cowboy singing star Gene Autry. During WWII, Johnson had helped Autry enlist in the Air Transport Command, where he served as a flight officer. To show his appreciation, Autry appeared at campaign rallies for LBJ, singing his signature song, “Back in the Saddle.”
Autry is shown in this publicity photo with the Pinafores, who appeared with him on his weekly radio program The Gene Autry Show. Learn more about Gene Autry at the Oklahoma Historical Society.
