Dorie Miller, Another Texan, Takes Action at Pearl Harbor
One of the Texan heroes of WWII is featured in the film above. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, Doris “Dorie” Miller, jumped into action on the U.S.S. Arizona. Amidst the chaos of the attack, Miller—a Mess Attendant from Waco—took control of an unmanned gun on deck and shot down 4 Japanese aircraft. Miller was awarded the Navy Cross for his courage.
This short film about Miller, from the Texas Archive of the Moving Image, was filmed in 1986. It is narrated by Tom Landry, former coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Click on the title to play.
